How to Plan for Your Small Business
Email to Friend  Email to Friend    PDF Version  PDF Version

If you're having trouble growing your small business, ask yourself the following questions:

  1.   Have I written a company mission statement?
  2.   Am I dedicating enough time to planning?
  3.   Who do I need to ask for help?

Tip #1: Write a Company Mission Statement

How can you know where you're going if you don't know what your goals are? By writing a company mission statement, you are not only defining what your company stands for but giving your employees some clear direction as to where the company is heading.

Tip #2: Dedicate Time to Planning

If you want your company to succeed, you must put in the time. Set aside time each day or each week to reflect on what goals your company has set, reached, or needs to reach. By collecting this information, you'll have a better understanding of what steps need to be taken next to further your company's growth — should you offer your employees better training? Do you need to purchase updated equipment?

Tip #3: Ask for Help

Whether you're just starting out or have owned your own business for several years, don't be afraid to ask for help. Seek out other small business owners, professionals, and workers. Find a mentor. Ask for advice from others who have successfully launched and maintained their own businesses. You can discover how they effectively planned the growth of their companies, how they continued earning money, how they successfully trained their staff, etc., and use their guidance to better grow your own company. After all, according to the Danish proverb, ''He who is afraid of asking is ashamed of learning.''
